Greetings Florida FTC Teams, Coaches, Volunteers, and Sponsors:

Four weeks until the grand reveal of the Rover Ruckus FTC game and I am pleased to announce that we will have five kick-off events located throughout Florida to ensure all teams are able to attend a local event. Your team can decide to attend any of the five events. This is your opportunity to learn about the new game rules, meet other teams, and learn about the Florida FTC program. I encourage all teams to attend one of the kick-off events.

You can start learning about this year’s FTC game rules by reviewing Part 1 of the Game Manual located on the following website: I encourage you to review Chapter 8.0 The Robot carefully as there is a new section in the manual this year that provides a hint about a new scoring element this season.

Newsletter Details:

1.    Season Kick-off Events – We will have five kick-off events in Florida on September 8, 2018. One of the more interesting things about the upcoming season is that this is the first time that all of the FIRST programs (FLL Jr., FLL, FTC, & FRC)  are structured around a single theme: SPACE. To highlight the season focus on space, we will have a very exciting kick-off event at the Kennedy Space Center that will be a full day of activities. 2.    Northwest Florida League (Florida Panhandle) – One of the primary reasons we started implementing the league system in Florida is to help minimize travel cost and time by focusing on local events clustered around groups of teams.  With the growth of the Florida FTC program and the desire to reduce the travel cost/time for teams in the Florida Panhandle area, we are pleased to announce that we will have a new league covering the following Florida counties: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Okalossa, Santa Rose, Walton, Wakulla, and Washington. Lauren Bierman will be the League Director and Doolittle Institute will provide support for hosting events, identifying volunteers, and funding.  Lauren is working to identify a team of volunteers to operate the league and identify league meet locations and dates.

3.    Team Grant Information –

  • Florida Power & Light is offering $750 to rookie teams if you are in one of the counties listed below.  See that attached PDF document for details on the grant an how to apply.  The following are the Florida counties supported by Florida Power & Light:

  • The DEKA Foundation has generously funded our FIRST Tech Challenge Rookie Team Grant. Please share this information with any new interested teams, or with any potential new teams, at your FIRST Tech Challenge Outreach events. This grant will cover the $275 registration fee and $225 worth of product. Please visit our website for more information about our 2018-2019 FIRST Tech Challenge Rookie Grant.
  • Rockwell Collins will again be supporting Florida FTC teams. The Florida Rockwell Collins grant application will be distributed to teams in late August or early September.

4.    Outreach Opportunities:

  • August 25-26, 2018 -- FIRST will be represented by teams from all programs (FLL, FTC, & FRC) at the Orlando Science Center Inventors Weekend on August 25-26 from 11am to 3pm. If your team is interested in representing the FTC program at this event, please complete the application form located at the following web page:
  • October 20, 2018 – We are looking for a couple of FTC teams that would like to represent the program at the 8th Annual  Saint Petersburg Science Festival held this year on Saturday, October 20th, from 10am – 4pm at USF St. Pete & Poynter Park along the Bayboro Waterfront.
